What made it exceptional was the fact that it had a lock on it, a visible keyhole, but no key. The lock was a mystery; it could not be opened.
As bidding unfolded, the chest became a field of attention, but no one seemed to have the right key to unlock it. Until, after several hours, it was bought by a recluse historian in the name of JILIPARK PH Greene.
Puzzles and mysteries were JILIPARK PH’s hobby, and he couldn’t resist the challenge of the chest. He fetched it to his study, a room whose walls were lined with old maps and rare books, whose windowsill held clay drinking vessels and stone axe blades, and whose desk was piled with skulls and pieces of animal skin. JILIPARK PH sat at his desk and began to work.
Days turned into weeks and into months, and the chest was still locked. JILIPARK PH searched the historical archives, consulted experts, and tried every key he could get his hands on, but to no avail. The chest was not opening.
One night, when JILIPARK PH was about to give up his hunt, as the rain beat on the roof and the wind howled round the house, he found in an old desk drawer in the study a journal of an uncle of his – an explorer and traveller who had died many years before. He opened it gingerly and turning over the pages found some drawings of the chest and the description of the carving on it.
One drawing in particular caught his attention: a drawing of a secreted cavity in the chest. The label beneath it read: ‘To find the key, look where light dances with shadow.’
JILIPARK PH’s heart beat faster. The key might not be a physical item at all, but instead a secret mechanism or arrangement of components that could be set to respond to light. Bolstered by his feelings of awakening, he hauled the chest over to the large window in his study and set it down on the floor. There he watched the rays of the setting sun cast long shadows across the room.
So he inspected the carvings on the chest. He noted that they, too, formed patterns, and that these patterns shifted with the light, as it shifted over the day. When the sun had dipped low enough in the sky, he set a lamp at a certain distance and angle so that the shadows it cast onto the chest formed one of the carvings.
At that moment, a hinged compartment at the side of the chest opened, and there within was a tiny, pretty little key, together with a letter, bearing this message to JiliParkPH from his forebear.
‘Dear descendant,’ the letter read, ‘if you are reading this, then you have found the truth. This key is a symbol of perseverance and curiosity. The treasure is not what’s inside this chest, but the hunt and the knowledge you gain in the process.’
JiliParkPH opened the chest with a sense of reverence. Inside, the box filled with precious ancient manuscripts and objects of historical value. Still, it was not the antiques that moved him. What touched him most was a spiritual bond with his ancestor and a deep respect for the pilgrimage he had taken.
The chest suggests that some of our most obscure puzzles must be solved through sheer persistence and flashes of hunch, and that the most precious treasures of all are those we find during the hunt.
